Week of May 30
Parsha Bamidbar
(from Morah, Morah Teach Me Torah)
This week's parsha, Bamidbar, is the first parsha in the 4 th book of the Torah! Bamidbar means in the desert (or wilderness). In English bibles Bamidbar is called Numbers because Moshe is instructed to count the number of Jewish people in the desert.
Moshe is also instructed to arrange the 12 tribes of Israel (shevetim) around the Mishkan (the traveling shul) to protect it.
Moshe thought there would be arguments about who went where, but the tribes realized that they needed to work together to protect their most precious possession. This is the order around the Mishkan:
Asher |
Dan |
Naphtali |
Benjamin |
|
Issachar |
Ephraim |
The Mishkan |
Levi |
Judah |
Manasseh |
|
Zebulan |
Gad |
Reuben |
Simeon |
Each tribe had a flag and special symbol that represented them. The Torah was placed in the center of the formation so that it would always be in the center of all our lives.
Discussion Questions:
- What does Bamidbar mean?
(In the desert or wilderness)
- Why do you think it was important to protect the Mishkan?
(The Torah and all the commandments were inside)
